On July 10, 2025, federal agents from ICE, DHS, and even the National Guard raided two state-licensed cannabis farms operated by Glass House Brands in California. Over 200 people were detained. Tear gas and rubber bullets were fired into crowds that included children, elected officials, and peaceful protesters. One man died. Ten undocumented minors were taken into custody. These were not clandestine grow ops hidden in the woodsâthese were fully regulated businesses under California law.
As I read the reports, I felt stunnedânot only by the brutality of the enforcement but by the blatant irony of it all. For decades, the Republican Party has been the loudest voice for statesâ rights, for decreasing federal power, and for restoring âlocal controlâ over matters like health care, education, gun laws, and land use. And yet, in this case, the full weight of federal authority came crashing downânot on criminal drug cartels, but on legal businesses operating within the rights granted by their state.
Where is the outcry from those self-proclaimed champions of decentralization now?
I follow a spiritual path that blends mysticism with responsibility. I cannot look away when human dignity is trampled under the boot of bureaucracy. These farmworkersâmany undocumented, yes, but also human beings with familiesâwere thrown to the ground, shackled, and loaded into buses as if they were threats to national security. A man fell from a greenhouse platform and later died in a hospital. Ten childrenâsome as young as 14âwere taken into federal custody.
And where were the defenders of personal liberty? Where were the âleave us aloneâ voices now so silent in the face of government overreach?
As I watched video footage and read firsthand accounts (source), I thought of Mahavatar Babajiâs teaching: âA hypocritical spiritualist is worse than a materialist.â I would add: A hypocritical patriot is more dangerous than an open authoritarian.
This wasnât law enforcementâit was political theater at the expense of real human lives.
Letâs be clear. Under federal law, cannabis is still classified as a Schedule I substance, making it a felony to use, grow, or possessâeven if your state has legalized it. According to federal policy, cannabis is treated the same as heroin: no medical value, high potential for abuse. This despite overwhelming scientific evidence and public support for its medicinal and recreational use.
Californiaâlike 23 other statesâhas legalized cannabis. Over 38 states have legalized it for medical purposes. So when ICE agents stormed Glass House farms, they werenât busting a black marketâthey were trampling on a stateâs explicit legislative decision. And the silence from so-called âstatesâ rightsâ advocates is deafening.
So hereâs the paradox: the same political party that argues for the sovereignty of states over federal mandates has built and supported the very enforcement infrastructure that ignores those rights when it suits them.
âHe alone knows the inner voice of truth who walks the path of love and consistency.â â Sri Yukteswar
Thereâs no consistency here. Just control.
So who suffers when political ideologies collide with lived realities? The workers, the poor, the undocumented. Always.
Glass House was creating jobs, paying taxes, following environmental and labor laws. And yet, over 500 peopleâprotesters, family members, and even elected officialsâwere forcibly blocked from witnessing the arrests. One worker died, and 3â5 others were hospitalized. Meanwhile, ICE detained minors who may have been trafficked, exploited, or simply desperate to survive.
And letâs be honest: If these were suburban dispensaries owned by corporate investors, we likely wouldnât have seen a raid at all. This enforcement disproportionately impacts brown bodies, immigrant laborers, and small farmers. It isnât about public safety. Itâs about powerâand the selective use of it.
Where is the Republican Partyâs moral clarity when the boot on the neck is their own boot?
Governor Gavin Newsom did not mince words. He called out the hypocrisy and labeled the raid for what it was: a political attack, not a law enforcement necessity.
Representative Salud Carbajal and others joined in outrage, reminding the public that these were legal farms, regulated under California law. The response? A militarized crackdown more appropriate for a cartel raid than a licensed business.
Even Glass Houseâs statement underscored their full compliance with state regulations. They denied knowingly hiring minors and committed to cooperating fully with investigators.
This is how a democracy diesânot with a bang, but with a raid, while half the country cheers or looks away.
This incident cannot fade from the news cycle without real accountability. We must:
De-schedule cannabis federally. The Schedule I classification is a lie built on racist and political motives.
Protect state rights. If we truly believe in federalism, then let the states lead where theyâve already chosen to.
Enforce labor protections and transparency. Child labor violations and worker exploitation must be investigated swiftlyâbut not with tanks and guns.
Reform immigration. These people are not threats. They are laborers, community members, and often the lifeblood of legal industries.
And for my fellow spiritual seekers: donât let ideology disguise injustice. As Paramahansa Yogananda once said, âSpiritual advancement is measured by the depth of your compassion.â Compassion does not call rubber bullets justice. Compassion sees the divine in every detained child, every mourning family, every fearful worker.
Thereâs an old saying: âBe careful what you wish for.â Conservatives have long wished for the return of statesâ rights, local sovereignty, and small government. But the Glass House raid reveals a deeper truth: those values are negotiableâunless they align with centralized power and political gain.
We are in a spiritual and civic crisis. This isnât just about cannabis. Itâs about truth, hypocrisy, and the need for moral clarity in a country divided by legal schizophrenia and political theater.
I call on you to:
Demand cannabis de-scheduling.
Hold federal agencies accountable for overreach.
Speak to your representatives about labor and immigration justice.
Reject partisan silence in the face of real human suffering.
âLet your life be the light that reveals truth in a world clouded by contradictions.â â Inspired by Sri Ramakrishnaâs VijĂąÄna Vedanta
We cannot spiritualize our lives while ignoring the cries of our brothers and sisters. Stand up. Speak out. Shine the light.
